Illiterate Light rocked Mercury Lounge on Wednesday night, bringing their infectious southern rock to the Lower East Side for a set that continued to build as the night progressed.

The two-piece duo from Harrisburg, VA eased into the set with songs off of their Sweet Beast EP including “Nuthin’s Fair” “Two Cats,” and the title track “Sweet Beast,” also giving fans a taste of new single “Lorelei” and a yet-unreleased single “Existential Crisis,” which will come out in anticipation of their fall full-length album.

With each successive song, tension and energy grew, climaxing with “Better Than I Used To” and an explosive finish in “Growin’ Down” that saw lead vocalist Jeff Gorman enter the crowd during an extended solo to finish the song.
